A Temporary Home for Pets in Need
The Spartanburg Humane Society offers a second chance for pets who can no longer stay in their homes.
We also work with the city of Spartanburg to help reunite lost pets with their families.
As of November 1, 2011, strays animals found in Spartanburg County are being transported to Greenville County Animal Care Services.
Whether an animal comes to us from the City of Spartanburg Animal Control or from a former family, it is treated with love and respect here with us.

If you are considering surrendering your pet because of a medical condition and would like help, please contact the Spartanburg Humane Society Veterinary Clinic.

If your dog or cat is missing, don’t wait! Contact the animal shelter that houses lost animals from your community. Nobody knows your companion as well as you, so it is always best to visit the shelter to look for your pet. Visit as often as possible –shelters receive lost dogs and cats from animal control officers and good Samaritans every day. More tips on finding a missing pet.
If you live in the city limits of Spartanburg:
Immediately contact the Spartanburg Humane Society’s Lost and Found department to complete a lost report, or fill one out online.

If you live in Spartanburg County:
As of November 1st, 2011 Spartanburg County Council elected to contract with Greenville County Animal Care Services for the housing and care of its stray animals. This means that the Spartanburg Humane Society no longer houses lost pets found in Spartanburg County (outside the city limits of Spartanburg).
Please review all of the information below to make sure you are aware of the new steps needed to locate your pet:
You will need to contact Greenville Animal Care Services to see if your pet has been picked up. You can complete a lost report on Greenville Animal Care Service’s website. You may also check out Spartanburg County Animal Control’s online photo gallery of animals that have been picked up by animal control officers. You should also visit Greenville Animal Care Services to look for your lost pet.

If you find the animal in the city limits of Spartanburg, and you feel comfortable handling and transporting the animal, you can bring it directly to the Spartanburg Humane Society. (map)

End of life services for pets
The Spartanburg Humane Society strives to support pet owners at every stage of their companions’ lives. This includes those sad times when euthanasia is necessary to end suffering from illness or age.
We also offer private and communal cremation. Pet owners are welcome to inter their pets ashes in our beautiful and peaceful Remembrance Garden. The Spartanburg Humane Society provides end of life services that are designed to help pet owners say goodbye to their friends peacefully and respectfully.

Giving up a pet is a very difficult and emotional decision. At the Spartanburg Humane Society, our goal is to help you keep your pet at home.

The Spartanburg Humane Society has a very high standard of care for all pets in our shelter. This includes essential vaccinations and boosters, screening and treatment of intestinal parasites like round worms and hookworms, screening for feline leukemia or heartworm disease, and regular flea control, not to mention healthy food, a clean environment, and TLC.
We want to provide your pet with the best possible care we can for their well being and in order to give them the best possible chance for adoption into a loving home. We need your help to make this possible. We ask for a minimum service fee when you are turning in your pet or pets. This fee is due when your pet to us. The amount depends on the type and number of pets you are turning in.
These amounts are only minimums and do not cover the full cost of care that pets receive. Please support this care as generously as you are able.
Pets from Spartanburg County
- Single dogs, cats or rabbits require a fee of $95.00 each.
- Litters of puppies or kittens require a fee of $150.00 per litter.
- Mother dog/cat with the litter of puppies/kittens require a fee of $195.00
Returned pets adopted from the SHS
Pets from Outside Spartanburg County
We hear from many pet owners who are willing to travel from outside of Spartanburg County in order to give their companion the benefit of care at our shelter. We want to remain available for these pets, however, we must ask for additional support:
- Single dogs, or cats require a fee of $175.00 each.
- Litters of puppies or kittens require a fee of $250.00 per litter.
- Mom and litter require a fee of $300.00.
Humane Euthanasia Services
Choosing euthanasia for a beloved companion is one of the most painful decisions we face as pet owners. It can also be the final act of kindness and mercy we can offer our pets.
At the Spartanburg Humane Society, we understand this and we are committed to helping pet owners during this difficult time.
The Spartanburg Humane Society offers a full range of services to assist you during the difficult time of losing a pet to honor and care for your loved one with integrity, dignity and compassion – from euthanasia services, to cremation, to honoring your pet in our beautiful memorial garden, we are here to support you and your family during this difficult time. You are always welcome to be present with your companion during euthanasia.
If you wish to not be present for the euthanasia and have a pet under 40 pounds, we ask for a minimum donation of $40. For pets over 40 pounds, we ask for a donation of $50.
To schedule an appointment to be present with your pet during the euthanasia procedure: 864-583-4805, ext. 116. We ask for a minimum donation of $125 for this service.
Appointments can be scheduled Monday through Friday between 12 and 5:30 pm.
If you do not wish to be present with your pet during euthanasia, no appointment is necessary. This service is available Monday – Friday 12pm-6pm.

Cremation Services
We also offer private or communal cremations as a service to pet owners.
The fee for private cremation is $125.00

LOST & FOUND
Keep Your Best Friends Safe at Home
In Spartanburg County, dog owners are legally required to keep their pets on a leash or under direct control when off their property. Not only is this the law, it makes good sense!
Pets kept indoors or comfortably confined inside a fenced yard are protected from dangers such as other animals, people with ill-intentions, and traffic. Remember that cats need this protection, too.
Be prepared in case your pet does get away.
- A pet — even an indoor pet — has a better chance of being returned when wearing a collar and an ID tag with your name, address, and telephone number.
- Permanent microchip identification is also available through the Spartanburg Humane Society. You can get a microchip for your pet for $20 (including registration) for walk-ins during regular shelter business hours.
- Microchips cost $15 during vaccine clinics, which are held at the humane society every Monday, from 4:00 to 6:00 pm.
- Write up a complete description of your pet including any identifying information today, so that you won’t have to rely on your memory when you are worried about Tigger or Rover. And be sure to keep current pictures of your pet.
If your pet is missing. . .
- Don’t wait! If you lose a pet in the city of Spartanburg, come to the Spartanburg Humane Society (map) to complete a lost report and see if your pet is here.
- If you have lost your pet and live outside the city limits of Spartanburg, please contact Greenville Animal Care and Control at 864-467-3950.
- It is always best to visit the shelter to look for your pet in person because nobody knows your pet as well as you. Visit as often as possible – we receive lost dogs and cats nearly every day.
- If you can’t come to the shelter immediately and living within the city of Spartanburg, complete a lost report or call us at 864-583-4805, ext. 101 and then come to the shelter as soon as you can.
- Most pets, especially cats are found very close to home. Make sure to go door to door in your neighborhood several times each day. Ask neighbors, letter carriers, and delivery people if they have seen your pet.
- Post lost pet flyers at grocery stores, community centers, veterinary offices, and traffic intersections. Also, place advertisements in newspapers. Include your pet’s sex, age, weight, breed, color, and any special markings. Feel free to use this template to create a flyer for your missing pet.
